Collections of references

Before starting to draw, you need to collect all the required references of the object. For example, in our case, you need to collect information about the lotus flower. This information is collected by answering the following questions:

  • What color, size, and angle of the lotus flower are you going to draw?
  • Can you imagine a lotus flower in such detail that you don’t miss any aspect while drawing?
  • What if you use a picture of a lotus flower?
  • Isn’t finding a free image on the web a good idea?

Size of the drawing

The size of your drawing matters a lot. You should never use paper smaller than A3, A4 for drawing. These paper sizes allow you to start your drawing in the center and gradually work your way to the finished drawing. As drawing on a large piece of paper is much easier than on a smaller one.

Composition of the drawing

The composition of your flower drawing is more important than you think. The way you use a brush or pencil in your drawing represents your feelings. Just calm yourself down and use a stroke with minimum force to draw a lighter main frame of the object.

Defining Form

When you are done with the light shape of your lotus flower and its parts, you can then use strokes with a reasonable force to make your drawing visible. You can change the size or shape of anything during this time. You can also add elements, such as leaves, petals, or a thicker stem. It completely depends on your individual decision.

Shading

After finalizing the defining form of your lotus flower drawing, you can start shading the petals, leaves, and stems. Providing shadows will also enhance the beauty and details of the drawing. You can use any shading technique from hatching, scribbling, cross-hatching, stippling, and grading.

More details

You can always add more details if you like. You can add a forest in the background or the pond’s surface where that lotus flower blooms.

Step by Step guide on Lotus Flower Drawing

Once you decide to draw a lotus flower, all you need is a piece of paper, pencil, sharpener, colors, and eraser. And most importantly, a peaceful environment is a must.

Step 1: Start in the center of the paper. Draw an average size droplet pointing upward with an oval belly. This droplet represents the bud of the lotus flower.

Step 2: Draw a half droplet pointing upward and slightly sideways on the right side of the bud. Start this from the edge of the bud, preferably from above, and complete it by joining it below. Now you have a petal on the right side.

Step 3: Draw a half droplet on the left side as well by following the previous step. It will be a petal on the left side.

Step 4: Repeat drawing petals right and left until you think your lotus flower looks fine.

Step 5: Now is the time to draw the leaves of the lotus flower. Start by repeating the process of drawing leaves below the petals. You can do this by drawing droplets and half droplets pointing downwards and slightly sideways. Also, you can put layers on leaves to make them look 3D.

Step 6: Draw a thick stem, preferably a slight bending cylindrical shape below the middle leaf of the flower. The stem should stand on a big leaf floating on the water surface.

Step 7: Draw a horizontal line defining the perspective of the water surface. You can add waves or curls.

Step 8: Draw a small bud on any side of the lotus flower. This bud can have two tiny buds and small leaves, so it may look like it’s going to bloom soon.

Step 9: Start coloring the whole drawing. You can use colors of your choice on each part of the drawing.

Step 10: Do some tweaks here and there, like shades. You can also draw tiny waves or curls on the water surface to provide it with a more realistic look.
